We didn’t want to get halfway through the actual trials only to realise tweaking things one way would be more effective or efficient and have to start all over again (all iterations of the trials have to be the same)… So, for the last two weeks I’ve been testing various setups and methods for the Rofalcon Trials.

During preliminary testing, I had set up cameras at the test site (which is in Waiuku) around the bait (rabbit carcasses to draw Kahu into the area to establish a regular feeding site). They picked up some pretty awesome images – notably two Kahu that can be told apart (one has a white patch on the back of the neck, and the other has a white patch on the back of the head).

There was also a Kahu that came to feed in the dark at ~6:30pm which I thought was really interesting. I wondered how well they are able to see in the dark – did it fly or walk away?
I am under the impression there is a roost site nearby – perhaps he walked from there? If anyone knows more about foraging at night please get in touch!
